Human: Thorough irrigation is important. 

Assess risk of tetanus, rabies, HIV, hepatitis B/C.

Antibiotic prophylaxis is advised.

 

Cat or Dog: Give prophylaxis if cat bite/puncture wound; bite  to hand, foot, face, joint, tendon, ligament; immunocompromised/diabetic/asplenic/cirrhotic/ presence of prosthetic valve or prosthetic joint.

Prophylaxis or treatment:

co-amoxiclav

AND review at 24 & 48hrs

625mg TDS 

For 7 days

If penicillin allergic: 

metronidazole

 

400mg TDS

For 7 days

PLUS doxycycline (cat/dog/human)

AND review at 24 & 48hrs

100mg BD

For 7 days

or metronidazole

400mg TDS

 

For 7 days

PLUS clarithromycin (human bite) 

AND review at 24 & 48hrs

250-500mg BD

For 7 days
