Micro Organisms

CLINICAL FEATURES of MILD DIABETIC FOOT INFECTION:

  • Two or more features of inflammation: Swelling/Induration, Erythema, Pain, Warmth, Pus,  or

  • Any cellulitis <2cm around the wound confined to skin and subcutaneous tissue,  and

  • No evidence of systemic infection

Antibiotic Naive

Important: Therapy

Flucloxacillin 1g PO 6 hourly

Antibiotic Naive - Penicillin Allergy

Important: Therapy

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

 

Non-Antibiotics Naive

Important: Therapy

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

or

Clindamycin 450mg PO 8 hourly

MRSA

Important: Therapy

Review antibiotic sensitivities prior to prescribing:

Doxycycline 100mg PO 12 hourly

or

Co-trimoxazole 960mg PO 12 hourly

or

Clindamycin 450mg PO 8 hourly

TREATMENT DURATION:

7 days. If clinical response but not fully resolved after 7 days, give further 7 day course.
