Second Line

Metronidazole PO 400mg twice daily for 5 days

Trichomoniasis presents with yellow-green frothy vaginal discharge which has an offensive, fishy smell and may be accompanied by itch, inflammation, and dysuria. Trichomonas seen on a routine cervical screening test is not diagnostic. Treat only cases with a confirmed diagnosis. Sexual partner(s) should be treated simultaneously. Contact Sexual Health Services if further advice or help with partner notification required.

Send a high vaginal swab from all suspected cases, and treat only following laboratory confirmation. Screen for other sexually transmitted infections.

General advice: Patients should abstain from sexual intercourse (including oral sex) until they and their partner(s) have completed treatment and follow-up.
